VIP Petfoods Nissan GT-R Finishes Second in Targa Wrest Point Tarmac Rally

February 1, 2009 Comments off

The inaugural Targa Wrest Point short course tarmac rally was held this weekend in southern Tasmania, Australia. Three Nissan R35 GT-Rs were entered into the event, the VIP Petfoods GT-R driven by Tony Quinn and the two Donut King Racing Nissan GT-Rs driven by Tony Alford and Peter Leemhuis.

Tony Alford’s GT-R suffered brake pad issues on day one of the event. The front brakes weren’t biting hard enough causing the rears to be overworked. Overheating the rear brakes caused their pace to slow near the end of the day. Team Donut King Racing had experienced the same type of issue during the Tasmanian Tarmac Challenge tarmac rally in October 2008 so saw that pads were changed overnight.

The pad changed proved to be successful and day two was better with Alford’s pink GT-R finishing in 9th position overall.

Peter Leemhuis started off the rally in great shape in the second Donut King Racing R35 choosing to start with a different brake pad compound to Alford. They finished in 8th position after day one.

Day two was not so great for them however, they set a quick pace in the morning but had an off just after lunch time, they chose not finish the race.

Tony Quinn’s rally got off to a great start, being the second rally Quinn has driven the GT-R in he now “believes in the car” after spending the time with it competitively. The experience gained is giving him insight into what the car will do under certain conditions and he’s quicker for it, even managing to have the top speed record of 191km/h on stage TS3 Geeveston.

In comparison to the Porsches Tony has driven throughout the years, he says the GT-R is a lot easier to drive fast. His GT-R remains almost completely standard, standard suspension and tires. An upgraded exhaust is fitted since Tony prefers the car to be loud and finds the standard exhaust to be far too quiet.

Overall he was very happy with the performance of the car;

“The car has gone brilliantly all weekend, we’re really pleased. Look out if it’s wet in Targa in April, we’ll be hard to beat.”

Quinn finished in second place on day one, 16 seconds behind the race leader but poised for a great day two.

Day 2 was a continuation of day 1 for Quinn as the consistency of both driver and GT-R shone through. Tony was able to nudge ever closer to first place, at one point being within 2 seconds of the lead. After some hard work and great driving the VIP Petfoods GT-R finished in second place just three seconds behind the Porsche 911 GT3 RS of Greg Garwood and in front of Targa super-star Jim Richards in his Porsche 911 GT2 and tarmac rally veterans the Whites in their Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera.

Congratulations to Tony, Tony and Peter on your work racing the GT-R in real competition and great work being so successful at it.

January 24, 2008 Comments off

Fabcar’s R35 GT-R which we saw earlier on the docks in Perth, Australia is destined to be driven by Steve Jones in the “Quit Targa West” tarmac rally in September this year. Last night was the official launch of this, their first of two cars for the event, at their headquarters in Western Australia.

Another GT-R for Fabcar is on it’s way and will also be for Quit Targa West 2008 to be driven by Tolli Challis.

The Quit Targa West is on from the 4th – 7th of September 2008 and will attract some top notch cars and drivers. Last years winner was Jim Richards/Barry Oliver in a Porsche GT3 RS followed by Tony Longhurst/Jahmeil Taylor in a Skelta G-Force. The GT-R will have it’s work cut out for it!

New GTR to Feature at Targa Tasmania 2008 Tarmac Rally

December 6, 2007 Comments off

Targa Tasmania has confirmed the new Nissan GTR will make it’s debut at Targa 2008 racing for sponsor Donut King. The bright pink colours of the team are sure to attract attention (and hate from purists) but the car is certain to do well.

Targa Tasmania has traditionally been entered by many a GTR but dominated by Porsche until 2005 when John White drove his R34 GT-R V-Spec II to victory over the 44 stage, ~2000 kilometer rally.

Auzrun November 2010 – Steve Jones to Pilot Japanese Cop Car R35 in Aussie Rally

November 15, 2010 Comments off

Japanese Police GT-R Auzrun 2010

Having started in 2008, the Auzrun Lifestyle Rally is the first of it’s kind in Australia. Similar to what is known in Europe and the US as the Gumball events, the Auzrun is a 5 day long non-competitive drive event where drivers from all over Australia and the world will stretch their vehicle’s legs around south eastern quarter of Australia.

The rally begins in Sydney today and all manner of supercars, musclecars, tuner cars and character cars will be heading south to Melbourne where they will make their first stop. As in the Gumball, every stop is a party so drivers are set to have a massive week ahead of them. After Melbourne the cars will next stop in Torquay before finishing up in Adelaide, South Australia.

For the November 2010 Auzrun, Steve Jones with sponsor McDonalds will be entering the Fabcar 2009 GT-R in full Japanese police car mock livery put together by sponsor GT Graphics. Thanks to Josh @ Sixfour Skate, one of the car’s other sponsors, we have these scoop photos of the car before it heads out tonight. The car also sports some massive ADV1 21″ wheels thanks to ADV1 – they are 21″x10 up front and 21″x13 in the rear wrapped with tyres provided thanks to Tech9 Tyres.

This is not the first time readers here will have been introduced to Steve Jone. He claimed back to back victories in the Quit Targa West in 2008 and 2009 in a Nissan GT-R, he was also the youngest competitor to ever win the event at all in 2008.

Josh also plans to document the trip with photos and video so we look forward to hearing about the event from him as it happens! Have fun out there guys!

QUIT Targa West 2010: Nissan GT-Rs Take Out Top Honors Again!

August 28, 2010 Comments off

For the third year running the Nissan GT-R has taken out top honors in Western Australia’s QUIT Targa West Tarmac rally as Peter Major scores the win in the Competition Modern class and outright first for 2010. His R35 GT-R sped him to a 51 second victory over tarmac legend Jim Richards in his formidable Porsche GT2 which finished second. A tough position for Richards though as he was sandwhiched in by another GT-R of Peter Rullo and Simon Iseppi who were just 25 seconds behind by the end of the rally in third place.

“We’re over the moon the car was fantastic it did everything we wanted it to do. It was great racing against Jimmy (Jim Richards), you know he’s going to come hard and no matter what he does he’s going to be fast. You never know how hard he’s pushing so we just tried to stay on it and stay as quick as we could, luckily we were able to keep that gap we gained in the first leg”

– Peter Major

Back in the Modern Challenge class the GT-R is also proving it’s the tarmac rally weapon of choice as Mark and Andrew Conacher took their R35 to a class victory while Robert Darrington and David Abetz in their R35 followed them up by just 1 minute. Both GT-R’s were 8.5 minutes in front of the nearest, third place competitor in the class.

Major victorious at QUIT Targa West 2010
Peter Major has won his first QUIT Targa West Competition Modern crown holding off Jim Richards to take the outright rally win in Perth today.

Major and his co-driver Kim Screaigh (Nissan GTR 35) took top spot on the timing sheets from Richards midway into Leg 1 and continued to stretch their advantage across the final two Leg’s of the tarmac rally, ultimately taking victory by 51 seconds.

Just got the heads up from STILLEN on these being posted to Youtube. Some really great videos from the action at Targa Newfoundland 2009. The guys finished first in the Modern Class in the rally which has some suprisingly large number of suburban stages. In the wet they seem pretty hairy.

Great driving from Steve in these, check the rest out after the jump below…

STILLEN Targa Newfoundland: Winners of Targa Newfoundland Modern Division 2009

September 19, 2009 Comments off

stillen-day4-005

Legs 3, 4 and 5 have wrapped up and after 2,200 km of targa the team STILLEN Nissan GT-R driven by Steve Millen and Mike Monticello has finished first in the modern class for 2009. The team incurred just 1:20 of penalties through the course of the five days of racing which placed them sixth in the overall standings.

The car itself seems to have held up extremely well suffering really only a tiny CV boot failure which was patched and then finally replaced for day 4. Considering the rules requiring a maximum average speed of 135km/h over each leg, maybe it was even too fast as the guys had to consider backing off for stages.

Congratulations to team STILLEN and big thanks to the guys manning the STILLEN blog and taking photos / video for Road & Track for keeping us in the loop through the rally.

Quit Targa West 2009: Back to Back Wins for Steve Jones in the GT-R

August 25, 2009 Comments off

targawest09-barnsie01-001

An amazing result for the Nissan GT-R camp as Steve Jones and Ruari Souter-Dawson take the outright win for the 2009 Quit Targa West held over the weekend in Western Australia. Jones took the lead over rival Nissan GT-R pilot Tony Quinn during Leg 2 of racing and maintained it for the entire third day of racing. Quinn ended up finishing in second place overall for the event but was then excluded from the final results in post race inspection due to an exhaust “irregularity”.

Steve Jones was the youngest winner ever for the Quit Targa West in 2008 so to pull off back to back wins is a damn good effort. Congrats to the team!

In the Modern Challenge class, the GT-R also came away victorious as brothers Mark and Andrew Conacher beat out their next fastest competitor by over 3 and a half minutes.

Great work to all involved and again a great highlight that the GT-R is now the force to be reckoned with in the tarmac rally world.
