Samurai Speed GT-R Not Dead, Minor Damage Afterall

The “big bang”, everyone’s heard about someone who’s done it, or done it themselves, launched their highly tuned car down the drag strip and bang. Sometimes it’s an engine, sometimes it’s a drive shaft, it’s always sad though and you never get to drive the car home. The long wait for a truck and the mental calculations that don’t stop about what exactly failed and how many thousands of bucks is it going to take to fix.

When Samurai Speed headed out to the track on Wednesday night they were able to run consistently in the 10.5’s but it wasn’t enough. On the last run of the night they decided to go all out, a 150 shot of nitrous was rigged and it was on.

Shortly after launch there was a bang and the worst was feared, the car was trucked back to Samurai Speed’s workshop for inspection and if needed, tear down.

Good news though, after inspection the engine lives on in good health, the big bang heard after launch was the sound of the flywheel housing being destroyed by the engines torque. A new housing has been ordered from Nissan. Other minor damage was caused to the exhaust but John from Samurai Speed reckons for less than $1,800 in parts the car will be back on the road.

Samurai Speed Set Nissan GT-R Quarter Mile Record: 10.47 @ 132 mph

Samurai Speed
is back at it again out on the track setting records. Many of you will remember that this very same GT-R had previously set the bar high with their 10.53 ET backed by their famous exploding gearbox trick. Two hundred launches tend to do that to any gearbox.

Since then however the car has been off the road while solutions were found to the problem of repairing the gearbox without resorting to replacing it with an entirely new transaxle assembly from Nissan. Enter PPG’s first gear and input shaft set available and shipping as of last month. For $1,500 in parts and using inhouse labour they were able to replace the faulty gear and enhance the strength at the same time.

In between then and now, Samurai Speed also fitted up a nitrous system as well but have not rigged it to automatically function yet. So a 25 shot per side, manually activated was all that was used this run.

The Rise and Fall and Rise Again of the Fastest Nissan GT-R: Part 1

The end of 2008 brings to a close the first chapter in the story of one special Nissan GT-R that we’ve been following since early days here. During the last few months there’s been no other GT-R that could come close to it down the drag strip once it dipped into the mid 10’s consistently.

It was somewhat fitting that on the last track event of 2008 it was to again break it’s own record and ultimately break itself when it’s transmission let go doing what it did best, launching hard at the drag strip.

Over 100 launches using the Nissan GT-R’s now infamous launch control, with approximately 30 of those resulting in a sub-10 second ET, took it’s toll. Recorded on video for posterity you can watch what it feels like to strip first gear in a new GT-R.
