Donut King Racing Team’s Second R35 GT-R Get’s In Shape

December 13, 2008 Comments off

Regular readers will remember Team Donut King’s rather ostentatious choice of colour for their racing cars from Targa Tasmania 2008 and Tasmanian Tarmac Challenge 2008.

A second Nissan R35 GT-R has recently joined the ranks and is already in preparation for racing early next year. One of the first steps of course is being completely stripped down and yes…. painted bright pink!

It’s not all about the paint job, just back from the painters the car has had a full weld-in roll cage fitted. An extremely serious piece of kit.

Right now everything is stripped out of the car. From the carpets down to the sound deadening. The dash is going back in but very little else including the pedestrian safety hood airbag units which caused a bit of a blind moment for Russell Newman in the Tasmanian Tarmac Challenge earlier in the year when they unexpectedly deployed mid-race causing the hood to block half his view of the road.

Planned modifications are basic as you’d expect for a production class racing car. Upgraded but standard sized brake rotors, brake pads, Toyo Proxes R888 20″ tires, new exhaust system, Sparco racing seats and an ECU tune. Taking care of the details in this department is JustJap Racing.

Owner/Driver Peter Leemhuis is enjoying the car so far, and why not, it’s faster than his Ferrari! A veteran of past Targa Tasmanias and Tarmac Challenges driving the R32 Nissan Skyline GT-R, one drive of the new GT-R is all it took for him to decide to sign off on the order of the R35.

Early days yet but we should have some updates when the car nears completion and is entered into it’s first event.

Photo Gallery: Targa Tasmania Kicks Off Tuesday – GT-R Gears Up!

April 11, 2008 Comments off

Targa Tasmania 2008 kicks off this coming Tuesday, 15th of April and promises to be a mammoth one. For the first time the new Nissan R35 GT-R is competing in a tarmac rally against the worlds best supercars like the Porsche 911, Corvette Z06 and Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera.

Some of the GT-R’s biggest competition will come in serious packages like Jim Richard’s Porsche 911 GT2. Outright winner in eight of the past fifteen Targa Tamanias, Richard’s is certain to be number one in the Nissan’s crosshairs.

The GT-R is to be driven by Donut King Australia CEO Tony Alford with co-driver Karl Farmer. The team has had the car prepared by the guys at JustJap in Sydney and has recently had some serious hardware added in order to cope with the stresses of the six days and more than 2,000 kilometers of tarmac ahead of them.

The giant Brembo rotors are out. Replacing them are larger Mine’s 16 inch (400mm) slotted two piece rotors. Brake pads are upgraded to Hawk Performance items. Stock suspension has also been removed and upgraded with a full Mine’s ESTA Full Spec Suspension III kit providing more adjustability over the standard Bilstein Damptronic gear. The exhaust is flowing freely now with a titanium Silence-VX Pro Titan II setup again from Japanese tuning gurus Mine’s.

As this GT-R is a Japanese spec model the speed limiter issue had to be solved and the Mine’s VX ROM was just the ticket. A full roll cage and Sparco racing seats were also fitted.

The race isn’t just Porsche vs R35 though and plenty of other GT-R’s from all generations are racing. R34, R33 and R32 GT-R’s are represented as well as Mitsubishi Evos, Subaru WRX STis, Lotus Exige, even a Hyundai Tiburon.

Targa Tasmania is on from the 15th – 20th of April and GTRBlog will provide coverage of the GT-Rs performance so check back frequently for updates.

Donut King Targa Tasmania R35 GT-R Preparation: Part 2

February 5, 2008 Comments off

The Donut King R35 GT-R which will feature in the upcoming Targa Tasmania 2008 is now looking more the part with sponsors sign writing all over. We’ve been covering this car for a while now, check out the past stories in the links below.

The bright pink paint scheme has certainly attracted some criticism but this is the Donut King corporate colour scheme and has been on every Donut King owned car. Quite frankly it’s doing exactly what the owners want and attracting attention.

New GTR to Feature at Targa Tasmania 2008 Tarmac Rally

December 6, 2007 Comments off

Targa Tasmania has confirmed the new Nissan GTR will make it’s debut at Targa 2008 racing for sponsor Donut King. The bright pink colours of the team are sure to attract attention (and hate from purists) but the car is certain to do well.

Targa Tasmania has traditionally been entered by many a GTR but dominated by Porsche until 2005 when John White drove his R34 GT-R V-Spec II to victory over the 44 stage, ~2000 kilometer rally.
