Honda Issues a Challenge to the GT-R

June 18, 2008 Comments off

Honda boss Takeo Fukui has thrown down the gauntlet and demanded results at the famed Nurburgring from the engineers working on the new 2011 NSX. This front engine V10 powered Japanese supercar has made it’s first public appearance in Germany bearing full camouflage. The NSX is going to be a tough competitor for the GT-R with an expected 550 hp and Honda’s SH-AWD system getting the power the ground and in fact the CEO wont be happy until it beats the GT-R’s record 7 minute 29 second laptime.

Top Gear Season 11: GT-R vs Bullet Train Coming Soon

May 29, 2008 Comments off

It’s been going around for a little while now that in Top Gear season 11 Clarkson, Hammond and May head to Japan for the best race yet but until now it has only been speculation of what they actually race. It was published by BBC news on Tuesday that Jeremey Clarkson has revealed that the advesary this season is the reknowned shinkansen – bullet trains – of Japan.

One can guess which car they chose to pit it against, the one and only Nissan GT-R is the most likely candidate. Season 11 begins June 22nd on BBC in the UK.

This guy seems so happy to be on TV. Ever since I started watching Motorweek I’ve thought how insane it must be to work with this man. A not so great video but posting it for completeness. I must be OCD or something.

Nissan Press Release: Base Model Nissan GT-R Clocks a 7:29 Laptime @ Nurburgring

May 1, 2008 Comments off

This is quite amazing. Sure we’ve all heard the 7:38 lap time was achieved on a partially damp track and that a 7:34 was achieved later but a 7:29 is off the charts. Read on!

[May. 01, 2008 – 11:00 AM CET]

– GT-R among the fastest ever production road cars at the ‘Ring’ –

(CASCAIS, Portugal, 1st May 2008) – Nissan today announced that its GT-R supercar achieved a lap time at the infamous Nurburgring in Germany of seven minutes and 29 seconds. Recorded on April 16 and 17, the GT-R used was a base specification car and fitted with the standard Japanese market tires. Driven by GT-R chief test driver Tochio Suzuki, this latest lap time beats the previous fastest time for the GT-R by nine seconds.

The previous best lap time for GT-R of 7:38, also driven by Suzuki, was one of the fastest laps achieved by a production car despite conditions being slightly damp on two corners.

“At last year’s testing, we were frustrated by the conditions at the Nurburgring, always believing that the GT-R could go under seven minutes 30 seconds.” said Kazutoshi Mizuno, Chief Vehicle Engineer for GT-R. “Below seven minutes 30 seconds, the GT-R proves it is among the fastest mass-production cars in the world. We set out to build a multi-performance supercar accessible to anyone, anytime and anywhere – I believe the GT-R has delivered that promise.”

Deliveries of the all-new GT-R began in Japan in December 2007. Sales in the US and Canada start in July and extend to Europe and other markets over the next 12 months.

April 29, 2008 Comments off

Pack your bags and get your airfares sorted it time for a road trip across Japan in your (rented) Nissan GT-R. Yes you read right, you can now rent a new Nissan GT-R in Japan to see what all the fuss is about.

Check out this photo… Looks like Koei Rent-A-Car are putting in a little track time before they hand over the keys to customers. Why not!?

As for pricing, Koei weren’t immediately responding to inquiries on this but we’ll let you know soon.

Update: We have spoken to Koei this morning. Pricing is 60,000 yen for 24hrs plus mileage and is available to members only. Not sure what that last part is but I’m a member of Blockbuster if that helps.

Nissan Tokyo Smart Driver Campaign with Nissan GT-R

April 22, 2008 Comments off

Recently Nissan Japan released information on their involvement in a safe and smart driving campaign for Tokyo city residents and commuters. In a bid to lower road accidents and lower CO2 emissions from the city the Tokyo Smart Driver campaign was formed.

Nissan’s involvement includes volunteering a brand new Nissan GT-R for the cause to be seen, ironically, driving around Tokyo emitting CO2 in vast quantities. Awesome!

Anyway irony aside check out more pics after the jump.

LA Times: Rumble Seat: 2009 Nissan GT-R Review

April 16, 2008 Comments off

LA Times take to the Reno Fernley raceway in the new Nissan GT-R at the recent Nissan North America GT-R media event. Lots of positive feedback about how the car goes and handles but some criticism that it is too easy to drive and doesn’t evoke fear like it’s competitors.

Despite the GT-R’s official nickname, “Godzilla,” it’s more like 2 tons of fluffy kitten.

Dan Neil – LA Times

I understand his argument but would like to see someone, somewhere push it’s limits a little more. Are these journos holding back? I can’t help but feel there’s more to the GT-R than has been explored yet.
