Nissan Shows off New GT-R to Press at Nurburgring

October 12, 2010 Comments off

Journos from around the world have been given the first hands on with the latest incarnation of the Nissan GT-R over the past couple of weeks. What better place to do it than the Nurburgring where lucky press members were able to take the DBA-R35 on the Nordschlieffe to feel for themselves just how much of an improvement the 2012 model will be.

First of the articles have popped up on sites like Edmunds and Autocar each with some tantalising new photos of the car including finally some good interior shots.

To add to this, Nissan has been gracefully letting a few select European GT-R owners out on hot laps around the ‘ring with Nissan test drivers. What a ride, check out one of the YouTube videos below with Italian GT-R Club member Discoragno get’s a ride along with “Lord of the Ring” Toshio Suzuki himself.

2012 Nissan GT-R Spied With Updated Wheel Design

June 29, 2010 Comments off

Edmunds has scooped a few new photos of the 2012 GT-R at Nurburgring again today. This time shes wearing even less camouflage than before so we can start to properly appreciate the new curves up front.

What’s most surprising and what they failed to comment on was the completely new wheel design. It’s long been predicted that Nissan will also need to refresh the wheel design to complete a facelift and it looks like they have. Not a huge departure from the original design which is a good thing because the original wheels were great. These are expected to be slightly lighter than the 2009 versions.

Edmunds on the Kids Heart Nissan GT-R Stagea Wagon

August 17, 2009 Comments off

When we first caught a glimpse of the Kids Heart Nissan Stagea R35 GT-R conversion at Nagoya Auto Trend back in March we were instantly in love with the idea. M34 Stagea’s have been giving up their mundane wagon appearances to star as R34 GT-Rs forever so it was only right that the M35 should get in on the act too.

Edmunds must have also seen the appeal because they headed to Japan to find out more.

Head on over to read the full story with photos, albeit tiny ones, at the link below…

Friday Laughs: Camaro Tuner to Take on GT-R With Turbo V6

August 7, 2009 Comments off

East Texas Muscle Cars is where you can point and begin laughing as they reckon they’ve got the know how to slap together a GT-R killing Camaro based on the cooking variety V6. Edmunds Inside Line is reporting that the V6 will be upgraded with forged internals and a remote mount turbo kit. Add to that a few other off the shelf tuning parts and they think they can tweak it to 500hp and slay the GT-R at the Nurburgring.

Their answer to improving the Camaro’s handling … ?

Other changes include a Baer big brake kit, lightweight 20-inch iForged wheels and Pedders coil-overs and bushings to address “the stock Camaro’s tremendous understeer and cradle walk.”

I really gotta hand it to these guys in Texas, they brightened up my Friday with this. Whatever they’re smoking get me some.

Edmunds Nissan GT-R Suspension Walkaround

June 6, 2009 Comments off

The Nissan GT-R is the Car of the Week over on and as such they’ve followed their modern tradition of walking around the car and pointing out the technical intricacies of the suspension setup. Quite an interesting article for those interested to see what goes in to making the GT-R capable of 7:26 at the ‘Ring.

Head on over to the link below to read the whole thing.

Edmunds: Nissan GT-R SpecV Full Test

Nissan GT-R SpecV - Edmunds

Edmunds’ Peter Lyon has been to Nissan’s Tochigi Plant to get his hands on the Nissan GT-R SpecV. There he was able to not only drive the car but push it quite hard and bring back some performance numbers via the VBOX data recorder.

Overall interesting points to note are the improved steering feel, the improved handling at the limit by reduction of the understeer tendancy of the base GT-R as well as improved acceleration. On the skidpad test they managed 1.12g, a significant improvement over their numbers on the standard car of 0.93g.

Lastly he leaves us with an interesting quote from Mizuno:

Mizuno tells us, “The SpecV, in contrast to what you might be thinking, is not the high-performance version of the GT-R.” That’s right. Mr. GT-R has more magic up his sleeve.

Overall a good read and worth your time…

Edmunds Update Their Long Term GT-R and Get Faster

February 12, 2009 Comments off

Edmunds long term test blog has been debating on whether or not to update their Nissan GT-R with the latest software update from Nissan for a couple of weeks now.

They finally decided to go ahead with it (for science!) and have now put it to the test. They’ve confirmed what others are saying and the GT-R is only improved by this update.

Results – VDC Off:

  • 0-60mph – 3.6 sec (3.3 adjusted)
  • 0-400m ET – 11.6 sec @ 118.9 mph

Results – VDC On:

  • 0-60mph – 3.6 sec (3.4 adjusted)
  • 0-400m ET – 11.7 sec @ 118.5 mph

Their “tips” on launching the updated GT-R may explain why their time is not as fast as we’ve seen. Some owners are reporting that there’s more to it than just planting the brake and the throttle. There’s a certain technique and timing required to get the best out of the new launch.

They also don’t mention what transmission mode they’re in since you can now do it in manual and auto in any transmission mode.

Check out the link below for the full article with details and a comparison to their previous best results…

LA Auto Show: Nissan Exec Confirms Series II GT-R Minus Launch Control

November 20, 2008 Comments off

Edmunds has been busy at the LA AutoShow today chasing Nissan executives around until someone gave them a straight answer. So Nissan is almost certainly leaving the fabled Nissan GT-R’s launch-control out of the series II (MY10) Nissan GT-R in the US market.

This correlates with the rumours we’ve already been hearing about it not being offered at all on the Australian market Nissan GT-R come 2009.

As for other markets? Well we’ve seen the complete official list of changes for the series II Nissan GT-R in the Japanese market now and cannot find any reference to this change in that document but we wouldn’t at all be surprised to find it’s a global change when the production line starts back up in the near future.

Big deal or not? When the standard car without launch control is still able to manage a sub 4 second 0-60mph and 11 second 1/4 ET’s in the hands of private owners I don’t see this as such a big loss.

Tough Choice: 370z or GT-R? Not Really…

November 15, 2008 Comments off

What a decision to have to make? Drive the GT-R home for the weekend or the new 370z? Edmunds we’re faced with this choice and have asked for reader opinions.

Sounds like bragging to me, I can’t help but shoot internet death stares of jealousy at them though…
