Nissan GT-R EGOIST is Here – Official Launch Day With Photos

October 18th, 2010

Some scoffed when we broke the news that Nissan’s luxury pinnacle model of the Nissan GT-R would bear the moniker “EGOIST”. There it is though stuck firmly on the trunk of what was called the GT-R Spec-M through it’s development lifecycle.

It’s a nice looking badge ain’t it? Take a closer look at the one on the inside now because each EGOIST steering wheel GT-R emblem is hand crafted Maki-e by Wajimi lacquerware artist Mr. Sakae Kubota in Japan. This basically means it’s hand made lacquerware sprinkled with silver dust to bring out that silver coloring. The look of the badge will change as it ages which I’m told is one of it’s desirable qualities.

The same principals that are shown with the small details like that are applied throughout the car and are described by Nissan as follows:

EGOIST is the first and only Nissan GT-R in the world exclusively created by Takumi, or “master with greatest skills.” Each customer can choose a combination of interior colors among 20 choices. In addition, the Bose® sound system is exclusively tuned according to the driving position of each driver to meet every customer’s needs. This is the ultimate expression of the Nissan GT-R.

So artisanship and making the car your own are the big themes here. Mentioned is the color choices available, up to 20 different combinations in fact made up of 10 lower area colors (seats, passenger dash, doors, center console and so on) and 4 upper colors (roof lining, steering wheel, upper dash, carpet). You can see one such combination in the Nissan press photos of a Muelheim Brown lower and Muelheim Brown upper interior finished with brown stitching. The EGOIST’s leather is not only colorful but it’s hand selected and sewn by Seton Company in Germany by master craftsmen.

Other colors combinations EGOIST owners will have to choose from are:

In terms of performance changes, the EGOIST doesn’t bring a whole lot to the table. Yes there are some crossover components taken directly from the SpecV including:

  • 20″ Rays forged aluminium wheels in a new Blue Sword Chrome color
  • Titanium Exhaust system with those classic dual tips
  • Carbon Fibre rear spoiler manufactured by Challenge

Apart from these however there’s very little to differentiate it from the Pure Edition GT-R, no carbon brakes, no mention of the SpecV turbochargers, fancy suspension, or even the special high-gear boost mode available on the SpecV.

There is a really special BOSE sound system to enjoy your favorite tracks on featuring carbon composite woofers and custom tweaking for every owner. If I had one though I can’t help but think I would enjoy the titanium exhaust note a whole lot more than a set of BOSE speakers.

Where the Nissan GT-R EGOIST is priced at launch, which is fair and square in SpecV territory of 15,000,300 yen, I can’t help think that they might have spent a little too much time improving on things that really weren’t broken to begin with and too little on making the EGOIST as special as it needed to be to command the premium.

It’s really a compliment to Nissan in that they’ve done such an amazing job on the basic Pure Edition at not much under half the EGOIST’s pricetag.

I’ll reserve final judgment until I see it in the flesh but since it won’t launch outside Japan for quite some time I think I might be waiting a while.

Official Launch: MY11 (2012) Nissan GT-R – Nissan Opens Info Floodgates

October 17th, 2010

October 18th is here already in Japan so Nissan have unleashed the full spread of details on the new DBA-R35 GT-R model including full performance details and photography. With the press release comes confirmation of much of what we’d been saying for months now and that is the DBA-R35 is a leap ahead of the previous GT-R in terms of performance.

The main bullet points of improvements across the board begins with improved power and torque, better handling, improved aero and updated look and feel are extremely welcome to GT-R fans. What is also great to see is that the model range continues to expand in size with the addition as predicted of the EGOIST to the existing SpecV, Club Track Edition, and standard models. With that news comes some dissapointment though as many territories where the GT-R is sold will miss out on the full lineup with the EGOIST and Club Track only being considered in Japan, Europe and the Middle East (EGOIST only).

Skip all the rest of the fluff (for now at least) though because what most of us want to know is the hard numbers and the GT-R is not dissapointing here in any way. 530ps (522hp) @ 6400 rpm is the official power figure with 612Nm (451 lb/ft) of torque available from 3200 rpm to 6000 rpm. Nissan say this horsepower bump comes from running more boost, tweaking the A/F ratio, valve timing and improving the air intake.

What this means to the Nurburgring lap time you’re wondering? Word is Nissan have slashed 6 seconds off their previous best of 7:26 for a mind boggling 7:2x flat spin around the Nordschleife. Update to this update: The Nurburgring laptime is not officially confirmed at this stage.

In terms of new colors, we had previously mistranslated this one it seems or maybe it was changed. Looks like Meteor Flake Black (pictured above) is the new black to go with the correctly predicted Aurora Flare Blue Pearl blue.

Coming up next will be some hi-res photos of the new Nissan GT-R EGOIST as well as the updated SpecV and Club Track Editions…

Paris 2010: Nissan GT-R Spec-M / Egoist First Video

September 30th, 2010

As predicted by many, the brand new 2012 GT-R has most certainly turned up at the 2010 Paris Motorshow which starts October 2nd. Debuting in Paris is also evidently the luxury Nissan GT-R Egoist (aka SpecM). One lucky member of GTBOARD.com was able to get in early and scope it out in advance.

The GT-R in the video is fully decked out in R-Red leather interior, Rays SpecV wheels and SpecV carbon rear spoiler. Also visible in the engine bay is that new red engine cover. Absent though is any badge of any kind denoting the official model though it’s expected to keep it’s SpecM name in Europe.

We’ve run a post with a full list of SpecM / Egoist interior color options, head here to check it out…

More Power In Store for 2012, Spec-M Named for Japan Market: The Nissan GT-R EGOIST

August 30th, 2010

Well we did mention that the SpecM name was tentative and today we’ve heard another rumor from sources close to Nissan that the R35 GT-R “Gentleman’s Edition” will launch in the Japanese market as the Nissan GT-R Egoist. While the name seems insane to us it’s not too far outside the bounds of Japanese naming schemes so that we’d completely rule it out.

The SpecM nameplate is likely to be kept in markets outside Japan however so don’t completely cross it off your wish list just yet…

On the topic of rumors from sources close to Nissan Japan, here’s another we’ve just heard. Those folks hopeful that 520ps is the new peak power figure for the 2012 GT-R might be surprised to learn they can expect to be dissapointed. After seeing this figure making its way around blogs and forums one might start quoting it as fact by now but to this date no figure has appeared either officially or leaked. In the true spirit of it not being over ’til the fat lady sings, we’re now told by our reliable sources that 530ps – 540ps is more accurate.

I’ll leave that last one out there…

MotorTrend: 2012 Nissan GT-R Unmasked Spied at Nurburgring

June 23rd, 2010

There’s been a lot of the masked / camouflaged GT-R photos on various sites around the net this week. Unfortunately most of them gave us even less of an idea than we already had about what the facelifted 2012 GT-R was going to look like.

MotorTrend has changed that with the publication of some much more juicy photos clearly showing the front double canards and the rear diffuser updates.

It’s certainly a big departure from what I was expecting up front, I was assuming a more subdued front canard look. Nevertheless the rear end look appeals to me a lot.

Lots more photos at the MotorTrend website linked below…

Nissan GT-R Spec-M Still on – Debut Delayed Until 2010

November 23rd, 2009

spec-m-preview-001

It was a little disappointing that the next iteration in the Nissan GT-R lineup did not make it to the Tokyo Motor Show in October as expected. We have heard now that the project had been delayed slightly until 2010. There launch is now expected to be in January, so not too far to go.

The SpecM prototype has been seen by sources in Japan and, from what we’ve been told, many of the previous articles in Japanese car mags check out. This includes the front bumper update, full interior customization as well as some extra trim frills.

We’ve worked up a little photoshop of the exterior front end based on what sources have told us. Note the gold trim and gold projector surrounds in the headlights. The basis of the prototype car was a SpecV GT-R so the wheels (albeit in a lighter shade of gunmetal grey) and brakes were carried over as well.

It needs to be said that the SpecV’s carbon ceramic brakes are optional and a GT-R SpecM with no carbon ceramic brakes is going to be significantly cheaper than the 20,000,000 yen figure being tossed around at the moment.

On the inside, the entire interior of the SpecM prototype is swathed in leather, including the headliner and rear seats which are cloth and vinyl respectively on the lesser models. Material colours and, in some cases the entire material, are of course customizable.

We’re hoping to get to the SpecM launch in January, if all goes as planned stay tuned for more details.

2011 Nissan GT-R SpecM Rendered in Japan – More Details

September 29th, 2009

specm-002

With the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show right around the corner, Japanese car mags are speculating on the final look of the 2011 Nissan GT-R SpecM. The so called “GentleMen Spec” Nissan GT-R is expected to debut at the troubled bi-annual motor show where the first GT-R production model debuted in 2007.

In the November issue of Japanese Car Top Magazine (CARトップ). on sale this week, we learn that a fully optioned SpecM will eclipse the 18 million yen mark headed into 20 million yen (220k USD) territory. That would include the full SpecV++ treatment including hand stitched interior. Optional dry carbon parts are said to extend even further beyond what was seen from Nissan so far, and could include a full trunk lid replacement.

Color options are also sure to grow with a dark red rendered as well as a metallic yellow on the magazine’s cover. Other rumours including the December 2009 orders/first deliveries seem to be confirmed. We’ll know more once we get our hands on the magazine itself.

2011 GT-R Spied Again at Nurburgring – SpecM? Doubt It

September 14th, 2009

edmunds-2001-gtr-001

Nurburgring stalker extraordinaire KGP Photography has snapped shots of the Nissan GT-R back at Nurburgring this week. The shots clearly show the same stuff we posted back in April 2009 when NAGTROC member Kislik spotted the same car at the ‘ring.

Whats changed since then? Well the rear diffuser seems to have gained a long row of red LED’s which are most likely an update to the European/Australian specification’s rear fog light. The rear spoiler is now black and is possibly revised. Can’t tell exactly in what way.

Most car ‘blogs today are reporting this car to be the 2011 SpecM GT-R but personally, I can’t see much evidence to support that it is anything more than the 2011 facelift GT-R. Anyone else spot something I don’t on this car?

Next Nissan GT-R Spied Testing at Nurburgring

April 25th, 2009

2011 GT-R Testing at Nurburgring

Not official yet but, these could be shots of what will become the 2011 Nissan R35 GT-R. These photos were shot on Thursday 23rd of April in Germany while Nissan had the Nordscheife to themselves setting new best laps on the ‘Ring with another, base model, standard 2010 GT-R.

Kislik, our friendly GT-R owner from the Czech Republic snapped these shots of the masked car as it was tested during the same session.

Firstly we asked ourselves why there was a masked, apparently base spec model on the circuit? Some theories were, that this was an older test mule from 2007 or possibly a 2011 SpecM test mule?

What we can say is, as you can see for yourself in the insets above, this GT-R has never seen before modifications to the rear underspoiler. Combine that with the fact that this license plate was previously used on Nissan’s SpecV test car in 2008 I think we can rule out the 2007 test car/old mule theory and infer this is a new car.

Visible changes? Firstly there’s venting on the underspoiler sides. Secondly there appears to be a modification to the diffuser at the rear – It looks to be in two pieces now. This is a 100% crop image so it’s about the most detail we have right now. Let us know if you pick anything different.

Nissan GT-R SpecM for 2010, Announcement Rumoured for Tokyo Motor Show 2009

March 28th, 2009

Nissan GT-R SpecM - GTRBlog.com

When Nissan launched the GT-R at the Tokyo MotorShow in 2007 the deal was that each year we’d seen an evolutionary step taken and a new model released. Exactly what this meant we didn’t know at the time but so far Mizuno-san has kept his promise by launching the GT-R SpecV in January 2009. What’s next though?

Well even before the SpecV had been officially launched the rumours of the next evolutionary step were being spun by the Japanese print media. We’ve now heard that Mizuno-san’s plan is to have the Nissan GT-R SpecM on sale in 2010.

An additional rumour is that Nissan plans to announce the SpecM’s official launch at the 41st Tokyo MotorShow 2009 in October 2009. The timing seems awfully convenient so I do not doubt the source here. Orders to be taken late 2009 and deliveries in early 2010 would seem to fit the mould nicely.

So what is a SpecM? As many would know the R34 GT-R was the first GT-R to come bearing the nameplate “M-Spec” in two guises, the “M-Spec” and “M-Spec Nur”. Each was an upmarket GT-R aimed at the well-to-do gentleman buyer who prefers a little more class in their top of the range Skyline.

The base M-Spec was equipped with the V-Spec II level of equipment minus the carbon hood which was standard on the V-Spec II. The M-Spec had the base model’s aluminium item but got the interior swathed in black leather. The M-Spec suspension was tuned with a different spring arrangement and tuned dampers providing a more supple ride.

How will the R35 GT-R SpecM improve over the base model? Best Car magazine recently published that the GT-R SpecM would be customisable from the paint colour down to a choice of interior materials.

While the R35 GT-R SpecM base price is expected to start lower than the SpecV, I’m sure you can customise it to be quite pricey. Just tick that carbon-ceramic brake package box and see how you go.

7Tune wrote a little more on this a couple of weeks back, check their link for a bit more detail on the customization.

For now we’re keeping our ears to the ground to scope out whatever information we can…
