As the Targa Newfoundland rapidly approaches, STILLEN are wrapping up their own first tests of the AP Racing Carbon Ceramic Matrix (CCM) brake kit for the R35 GT-R. Picked this up off STILLEN’s twitter feed today. Road & Track have published a few new videos on their STILLEN GT-R video minisite of the car’s prep for the Targa Newfoundland. Some of these showing the fitting up of the new AP Racing Carbon Ceramic brakes for the GT-R as well as the bed-in procedure.

The car looks amazing and can’t wait to see more details on the carbon brakes.

Alcon SuperKit Brake Upgrades for Nissan GT-R in US from SpeedForSale

July 28th, 2009

alcon-gtr-100

Well we saw these first about a month ago, huge brake upgrades from UK based Alcon had made their way to a few early customers in Asia. The brakes are now officially available to all in Europe and the US.

July 27, 2009 – Alcon Components LTD, a world-wide leader in high performance braking systems and technology, has confirmed that SpeedForSale.com will be the exclusive North American distributor of their Nissan GT-R Brake SuperKits & OEM Lightweight Rotor Upgrades.

The official press release then goes on to give a few of the details of these mammoth brake kits, the largest currently available for the GT-R.

The GT-R SuperKit has the largest brake caliper, rotor, and pad upgrade available for the GT-R, with the front rotors having a massive 15.75” x 1.42” (400mm x 36mm) size, and the rear rotors coming in at 15.16” x 1.30” (385mm x 33mm.) The kit’s 2-piece floating rotors also include Alcon’s unique bobbin drive system and crescent groove pattern on the face along with 48 internal vanes with turbulators. The mammoth sized ‘Mono-block’ calipers are machined from solid billet and contain 6-pistons in both the front AND rear, along with dust seals, anti-rattle clips, ventilated piston inserts in the front, and utilization of the OEM parking brake in the rear. The brake pads included are Pagid RS9-2 models, with anti-squeal shims and a surface area of 33.6” square inches (217 square centimeters) in the front and 18.7” (121 sq cm) in the rear. High quality Goodridge stainless steel braided brake lines complete the kit. And, best of all, these huge brakes fit inside the OEM 20” wheels and work with the stock brake actuation system!

Pretty much brake porn right there… Pricing on the full SuperKit is $12,990 including everything you need and a choice between Castrol and Motrul brake fluid.

If you’re looking at upgrading brakes but are quite content with the standard Brembo calipers, Alcon are now also producing a lightweight OEM replacement rotor kit. A full set of four, including hats, pre-assembled, ready to fit up will set you back only $3,500 or just $3,000 if you’re one of the first four to order at the link below

Alcon Big Brake Upgrade for Nissan GT-R

June 25th, 2009

alcon-gtr-100

Alcon’s big brake kit has been anticipated for a while now and finally the first production versions are shipping. This lucky GT-R from Singapore was fitted up with it’s new anchors just last week.

These UK developed brakes are a complete upgrade including some mammoth 6 piston Monobloc front calipers responsible for clamping the upgraded two piece 400x36mm floating rotor assemblies. The rear brakes are also not forgotten and come with 6 piston calipers with 385x33mm rotors with hats that support the GT-Rs handbrake.

As for performance, well, this very set will be tested at Sepang Circuit in Malaysia in the coming weeks so we’ll wait to hear how they went.

Thanks to Maximusracing, who are the Singapore and Malaysia Alcon distributors, for the info and photos. Photos are (C) Maximusracing and may only be used with their permission.

AP Racing Release J-Hook Rotors for Nissan GT-R

April 8th, 2009

AP Racing J-Hook Rotors for Nissan GT-R

For those of you interested in serious braking performance with no compromises these may be the rotor upgrade for you. Released in addition to the earlier slotted design, this updated “J-Hook” design offers superior initial bite characteristics which leads to more confident braking performance.

Now combine this with the other features that the AP Racing rotors have such as improved airflow through the curved vein internal design, improved cooling, and cost savings by re-using OE aluminium hats. Overall they turn out to be one of the best value for money upgrades for the Nissan GT-R.

Price is around the $1,116 area from GT-RR.com for a pair including new hardware required to fit these to your existing hats.

Stillen Release AP Racing Rotor Upgrades for GT-R

January 14th, 2009

Cost effective brake upgrades don’t come around every day on the Nissan GT-R. When you have 380mm rotors standard clamped by massive Brembo calipers it has to be something pretty great to be considered an upgrade. Stillen have been working with AP Racing on putting together something that does just that though.

These AP Racing rotors feature an improved, track oriented design which is more suited to extreme temperature conditions without the cracking commonly being seen on the standard drilled rotor. The curved vein design manages heat better under stress as well.

Priced at $1,169.75 USD per pair this makes for a cheaper option than paying RRP for a set of OEM Brembo rotors if yours are worn or cracked. Your standard hats are re-used but new attaching hardware is supplied for that price.

Alcon Rotors for R35 GT-R

August 31st, 2008

Alcon have produced a range of front and rear brake rotors for R35 GT-R designed with a higher heat capacity than the standard items. They come with crescent grooves as opposed to being drilled which most people find more durable for track work. Other features of these rotors are:

  • Alloy bell, slightly lighter than standard
  • Curved vanes, versus standard straight vanes to provide better cooling
  • Alloy rotors, provide higher durability with a lighter weight
  • Standard size for bolt on fitment

Overall these rotors save a total of 1kg (2.2lbs) per front rotor. Since this is unsprung and rotational mass this is a significant saving. Prices are around the $2000 USD inc shipping per front rotor set or $3900 for a full set of front and rear rotors.
