SouthSide Performance Transmission Cooler for Nissan GT-R

December 24th, 2010

SSP Transmission Cooler for GTR

Another cool product from South Dakota based SSP is this R Spec Race Transmission Cooler for the R35’s GR6 transmission. The guys at SSP have tried a lot of various solutions on the circuit and finally decided on this three part solution. Originally released earlier in the year, it’s now been re-released at a lower price point with updated availability.

On the track they were able to gather enough data to say that this is the ideal solution for keeping your trans fluid temps in check. During 10 lap sessions in 85 degree heat they saw average fluid temps of 220 – 225 degrees.

The kit comes with everything you need for a quick easy install, is available now and sells for around the $2399 mark including a 1 year warranty on parts. Hit up the link below for contact details for SSP.

The price may be going back up in the new year so check it out soon if this is something you’re looking into…

HKS GT800 Turbo Kit – Installed and First Impressions

December 2nd, 2010

HKS GT800 Kit for GT-R

After hearing about the development of the HKS Turbo Kit, one particular GT-R owner closely involved with the GT-R community was privvy to some early information on this kit. As a member of NAGTROC forums, his enthusiasm for the GT800 kit brought him in contact with other GT-R owners, HKS pro dealers and HKS USA. Having been satisfied with the quality and results that HKS had seen, “Se7enGTR” was on the edge of his seat waiting for the final release of the kit.

When the day finally came, the HKS pro dealers were able to spill plenty of information over on the NAGTROC forums. They were confident that this kit would back all claims made by the HKS promo video.

Eugene from SP Engineering shared his visual comparison of the HKS GT800 kit vs the competitor’s kit and said, “The HKS GT 800 turbos seem to be capable of multiple things after simple visual comparison. This kit with proper combination of the tune and parts is capable of upto 900 WHP with quick response on our mustang dyno.”

Sean from Iveytune said, “Coming from my experience with the HKS 7640R turbos, I can assume the kit is easily capable of 800+ whp with very quick spool. These turbos have sweet spots after 24 psi. Each turbo flows 52 lbs/min and will max out around 500whp depending on the dynos. We will be testing our kit with shop car soon and will share the result with NAGTROC.”

Jotech Motosports built and delievered 2 kits to customers. Kenny@Jotech said, “We will let the customers to see the results with the kit and comment.”

Lastly, independant tuning company (i.e. not a HKS dealer) T1 Race Develpoment/InjectorDynamics, said, “As we tuned and saw the base result(600 whp 600 wtq just @ 19 psi on race gas) from one customer’s HKS GT800 GTR, we think there will be a lot of impressive results coming from these HKS turbo kits. These turbos are very responsive…”

Driving impression from the owners and the dealer testing will follow soon.

For more info on the HKS GT800 kit, please, contact the HKS prodealers at the forum:

Editors note: This is a guest blog from Se7enGTR, we’re pretty excited to see this HKS GT800 kit and Se7en has it fitted to his own GT-R. He supplied us with this excelent background piece but also this truckload of photos and we’re looking forward to hearing how he goes with it. – Kris

2012 Nissan GT-R Posts Amazing 0 – 62 Mph Time

November 16th, 2010

A few days ago we saw a teaser video of Nissan testing the new GT-R out at Sendai Highland racetrack in Japan. Nissan was in attendance in full force including Chief Engineer for the GT-R project Kazutoshi Mizuno-san.

The testing was focussed on one thing, off-the-line acceleration of the new DBA-R35 GT-R and determining what will be the official 0 – 100km/h (0 – 62 mph) time.

Above is the finally posted results video and with a track temp of just 13 degrees C (55.4 degrees F) and utilising the upgraded and tweaked new launch control featured on the DBA-R35, the GT-R reeled off a 3.046s run to 62 mph as measured by a V-Box measuring device.

To put that in perspective it is quicker than not only the new Porsch 911.2 Turbo it’s quicker than what Porsche rates their own 911 Turbo S special edition.

Not content with a three second flat 0-62mph, during analysis of the run afterwards, Mizuno mentions that with a warmer track temp and hence, warmer, stickier tyre contact, the new GT-R could very well dip into the 2.9’s.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Auzrun November 2010 – Steve Jones to Pilot Japanese Cop Car R35 in Aussie Rally

November 15th, 2010

Japanese Police GT-R Auzrun 2010

Having started in 2008, the Auzrun Lifestyle Rally is the first of it’s kind in Australia. Similar to what is known in Europe and the US as the Gumball events, the Auzrun is a 5 day long non-competitive drive event where drivers from all over Australia and the world will stretch their vehicle’s legs around south eastern quarter of Australia.

The rally begins in Sydney today and all manner of supercars, musclecars, tuner cars and character cars will be heading south to Melbourne where they will make their first stop. As in the Gumball, every stop is a party so drivers are set to have a massive week ahead of them. After Melbourne the cars will next stop in Torquay before finishing up in Adelaide, South Australia.

For the November 2010 Auzrun, Steve Jones with sponsor McDonalds will be entering the Fabcar 2009 GT-R in full Japanese police car mock livery put together by sponsor GT Graphics. Thanks to Josh @ Sixfour Skate, one of the car’s other sponsors, we have these scoop photos of the car before it heads out tonight. The car also sports some massive ADV1 21″ wheels thanks to ADV1 – they are 21″x10 up front and 21″x13 in the rear wrapped with tyres provided thanks to Tech9 Tyres.

This is not the first time readers here will have been introduced to Steve Jone. He claimed back to back victories in the Quit Targa West in 2008 and 2009 in a Nissan GT-R, he was also the youngest competitor to ever win the event at all in 2008.

Josh also plans to document the trip with photos and video so we look forward to hearing about the event from him as it happens! Have fun out there guys!

Tomei Launch Even Bigger Upgraded Procams for the Nissan GT-R

November 13th, 2010

Since launching their first upgrade Poncam camshafts for the VR38 back in March, Tomei has been busily preparing some significantly more hard core camshafts for the more heavy breathing VR38’s around. Recently they announced the availability of these Procams which look to be the biggest set of cams that the VR38 has seen to date.

Adding to the existing 256 degree 10.25 mm IN and 264 degree EX 10.50 mm lift Poncams which come as a fixed set of 4, the Procam range gives tuners the ability to select from a long list of profiles to mix and match on the Intake/Exhaust side. Here’s the full list of cam profiles available:

Once you’ve decided your application and selected your cam profile, price is fixed at just $550 MSRP per side so you’re looking at just $1100 all up for a full set irrespective of the profile you choose.

Hit up the Tomei website for more information or contact your favorite distributor of Tomei parts to order your set.

Albins / SSP Extreme Duty First Gear Upgrade for Nissan GT-R

November 10th, 2010

Albins SSP First Gear

Boasting more than a 50% improvement in strength over the OEM first gear in the Nissan GT-R’s GR6 transmission is the new Albins / SSP Extreme Duty First Gear Replacement. A bold claim but judging by the press release seems like it might be backed up by the numbers.

It features 40% more tooth width/contact area than the stock items, thicker shaft, “ground” tooth profile that offers profile protection and billet from proprietory high strength alloy. Albins specially treat each gearset after manufacturing to improve strength further so they say they’re good to 1000hp.

The first gear sets are designed as direct replacements and should not require any additional parts to get up and running. They’re priced at $2199.

Also from Albins / SSP is a new Final Drive package. Designed to allow big power GT-R’s to increase top speed to around ~214mph it’s great for those interested in standing mile comps and the like.

Other gearsets and ratios are planned soon so keep an eye out and check the following websites for the full details…

Boost Logic Crank Dampener for Nissan GT-R

October 25th, 2010

Parts news update time – something we haven’t done enough of lately. In this installment we highlight the latest release from Boost Logic which is their Crank Dampener/Pulley for the VR38. The guys at Boost Logic had noticed a disturbing trend of irregular main bearing wear during engine teardowns in their workshop which they corroborated with other workshops around that were doing the same.

In their view, this is being caused by crankshaft resonance possibly seen once the GT-R in question is tuned and still running the OEM dampener designed for OEM power.

To solve this issue and the potential bearing problems it can cause over time they’ve released this dampener of their own which uses a larger, higher quality dampener ring than factory which is better suited to balance out the stronger resonance created by engines that produce more torque.

Features:

  • Reduces Torsional Vibration
  • SFI 18.1 Approved
  • 360 Degree Lazer Engraved Timing Marks
  • OEM Crank Pulley Diameter

They’re priced around the $999 mark and you can order one at one of Boost Logic’s distributors.
