FIA GT 2009: Nissan GT-R Shows Some Great Pace in Final Round

After qualifying for 8th place on the grid for today’s final FIA GT round for 2009, the GT-R was making some great pace in the race. This round would be used to test the development of the car so far, in particular, the latest aero upgrades and new rear wing.

By the 33rd lap Michael Krumm was in 4th position overall and pitted for a driver change. Shortly after Darren Turner took the wheel however he began to notice odd readings in the tire pressure sensors. A rear brake caliper had stuck and was generating a lot of heat causing the tire pressure to rise.

The team changed out the caliper to correct the problem but the time taken to do so had put them out of competition for a great finish.

It is easily fixed, and will not be a problem in future, but for this race it is such a shame. We could have finished… well, I don’t know where, but it could have been a really good result for us.”

The team will continue development of the Nissan GT-R 2010 GT1 spec car to begin competitive championship racing in FIA GT season 2010. We’ll keep you posted when we find out which teams will be fielding them next year.

NISSAN GT-R flies at Zolder; But brake problem quashes team hopes
Zolder, Belgium (25th October, 2009)

Race day dawned bright and dry in Zolder for the final round of the 2009 FIA GT Championship, with the #35 NISSAN GT-R sitting a comfortable 8th on the grid for this, its last ‘test’ race of the year. NISSAN Motorsports, in partnership with Gigawave MotorSport, is here to evaluate the car under full race conditions (particularly the new aerodynamic package to increase rear downforce), rather than to aim for a podium finish. Nevertheless, the car’s clear potential and strong performance in qualifying had put the team in an optimistic mood.

Michael Krumm started the two-hour race and, on slick tyres, steadily moved his way up the grid from 8th to 4th position. The team had made some minor changes to the car’s set-up overnight, based on the drivers’ feedback after qualifying, and the changes were clearly working.

After 33 laps, Krumm pitted and handed the car over to Darren Turner. The refuelling, tyre change and driver change took 45 seconds, and Turner rejoined the race in 9th place – where he started to retake places and move up the field. But a brake problem was enough to quash the team’s hopes of a flying finish in the final FIA GT race of 2009.

“There is a tyre-pressure monitor inside the car and I could see that the rear left tyre pressure was going up and up… I was beginning to get worried. A brake problem meant everything was getting very hot, which was increasing the tyre pressure. When I brought the car into the pits, the team changed the caliper and disc, and everything was fine after that – we were putting in really good lap-times. But of course we had lost a lot of time in the pits so the final result was not what it could have been.”

The brake problem meant the car was in the pits for 24 minutes, and rejoined the race with just 21 minutes to go. Darren Turner put in a superb performance, posting lap-times that demonstrate the GT-R’s massive potential – but with so little of the race still to run, the team had to be satisfied with 8th in the GT1 class.

“We are disappointed with the result of our final race. We’ve not experienced such brake trouble since shakedown. But we were very pleased we could evaluate the performance of the new aerodynamic package in an actual race. With the strong and dedicated support of our partner Gigawave MotorSport, the development of the NISSAN GT-R has gone well throughout the season. We are looking forward to the FIA GT1 World Championship next year.”

The NISSAN GT-R’s testing and development programme will continue at full pace throughout the winter, in readiness for an all-out challenge in the 2010 FIA GT1 World Championship.

    Great news to know the car is getting faster and faster by every second. But still what a pity it caught this brake caliper problem. If the car didn’t have this little problem, it would be more higher in the results.
