If the masking is hiding something, it's not necessarily an alteration that's going to stick. Take concept cars at an auto show, for example...you'll see a car that looks incredible that is due to come out within 3-4 years. By the time it actually does show (if at all), it has been dumbed down into boring status. Testing is testing. They simply may be trying out a mod in the real world vs. the garage, but until you actually see it as a production model, it's all up in the air.

[...] GTRblog.com’s article on the masked test car at the Nürburgring picked up on most of the changes planned for the 2010 GT-R, the most obvious being the air vents behind the rear wheels on either side of the rear bumper and the revised rear diffuser. We are now told the the GT-R will feature an extra set of winglets on the front bumper and will be the most noticeable change made to the 2010 GT-R. The redesign is meant to have a slimming effect on the front bumper to make is look more sleek. What isn’t so noticeable is that the nose cone has been extended forward slightly to improve aerodynamics, although it’s unknown as to how much. As far as the appearance of the rest of the car goes, some minor changes will be applied but don’t expect anything too outstanding, we’re told the front bumper is to main feature of the face lift.
